"Steam Pup" sketches

Compilation of some sketches I did for the project.

Steam Pup final designs and story scene concepts

This is Lady Helena, the antagonist for the story I was developing for one of my classes.

This is the mechanical dog that I just call "Steam Pup" for lack of a better name. That was eventually the name I titled the story as well.

Rock Nouveau

For my graphic design history class, we had to do a project where we take a style of art in history and replicate it. I decided to do Art Nouveau, Mucha's style, with a modern twist. I love Mucha, and I know I don't do him justice, but here's to trying. I wanted to do a guy with long hair, and with the help of friends' suggestions, this is what I came up with. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Woot Guitar Hero :)

Color Turn-arounds

This is the final version of Victoria from the story I'm creating.

This is the final version of Victoria's big brother, John.

Two WIP that will probably have to wait

These are two sketches I did for fun.

This picture I was just toying with the idea of the popular girl with a cartoony style.

This last one is of Noa from a French comic that Marvel picked up for a few issues called Sky Doll.

I plan on coloring them both eventually.

Turn-around (lines only)

Here are the turn-arounds for Victoria and John. I plan on coloring them soon. In all the previous sketches, their proportions were progressively normalizing but I wanted to stay a little more cartoony. So these turnarounds helped me figure out all that stuff. I plan on doing a turn-around for Lady Helena, and possibly one more of Victoria in her tom-boy outfit.

Beach Remnants

These are kid versions of characters from my friends, Julie and Kitty's story "Lost Remnants." From left to right: Trevor (who is my character from that story), Shinra (Julie's character), and Vanessa (Kitty's character). It's sort of a collaboration story. Not sure if I'll color them or not.

Character designs

These are character designs for a story I'm developing for my special studies illustration class.
This is Victoria, who is a tomboy and goes by Vic.

This is John, her brother.

Finally, this is Lady Helena, the antagonist...

These aren't necessarily the final designs for the characters, I'm just working through things.

Commission# 3

This is the final version done for Ashen-Phoenix on deviantart. It's an anime I've never seen or heard of (especially since I don't watch anime anymore), so I hope I did the characters some justice. FYI, the anime is Utawarerumono... what a long name >.< Color was added very quickly, so it's not the best.

This is the sketch.. I'm coloring it but figured I might as well post the sketch.

Commissioin #2

Another overdue commission for somebody on deviantart. They asked for chibi + bunny + strawberries. Since I'm trying not to do anime style much anymore, I combined the bunny and chibi idea together. One more to go... It's already sketched, I just need to slap on some color. The sketches themselves have been done for a while, I just get really lazy when it comes to color. I told myself I needed to add color so my gallery isn't so bleh, but I'll try to get the last one done before school starts so I'll actually have time.

Deviantart Commission #1

First commission of 3 I took on from Deviantart. They're long, long overdue, but better late than never, right? This one was based off 3nigmatic-3go's original character. His character can be viewed on his account: http://3nigmatic-3go.deviantart.com/

2 more to go. I have them sketched out, but I'd like to lay on some color before submitting them.

Treehouse

This painting was done as my first project for my advanced digital painting summer class. Advanced makes it sound like I've had experience already, but being an animation major, I didn't have to worry about taking prerequisites. Anyway, the main focus of this project is to do a background, which I suck at and is why none of my drawings ever have backgrounds. I'm pretty happy with the way this turned out though. We had a few categories to choose from and I opted to draw a tree house, obviously. Nothing else was really specified for this one, so I had quite a bit of free range. Done in Corel Painter X.

Dialog Test

This is for my 3D animation class. Trevor is my original character, so it was fun to make him move. It's not that great, but skin weighting turned out to be such a challenge. Still, other than the dialog (which is from Shaun of the Dead) this is all mine from start to finish. In that respect, I'm quite proud, but in regards to the quality of animation, I know it could be better.

I realize that I'm burnt out from 3D animation. 3 Semester in a row taking different 3D animation courses will do that for me...

Big update

I decided to post all the work I've done for my cartooning and caricature class since I needed to scan them in the computer anyway.

This was one of our first projects. We did an activity lovingly named the exquisite corpse, where one person would draw a head, cover it up and pass it on, next person would draw the torso, cover it up and pass it on, and the last person would draw the feet. This got us thinking about incorporating different things in our drawings. Then we had to create our own character and this is what I came up with. The poses we took from sports pictures in a handout he gave us.

For this and the next one, we had to do a one page comic based on cliché ideas. In this case, doctors performing surgery.

Once again, cliché idea of being trapped on a desert island.

This was a four panel comic we did that could not include dialog. I hope it's self explanatory.

This was just an expression sheet we needed to do and ink.

We started getting into caricatures, which aren't really my thing and I probably won't pursue at all. I don't like the way this really turned out, his pose is stiff and ugly and woo, no background. I was just going for showing Governor Arnold as the body builder he was but letting himself go since he's getting older.

I think this piece is so funny. I'm not terribly proud of it because it really doesn't show any skill of mine, but I do like the idea. We had to take a well known person or celebrity and incorporate them in a well known picture or painting. I figured Michael Jackson and Picasso kinda went hand in hand. It was colored in water color, so it didn't scan too well.

Finally, this was our final project. We needed to take a classic fairy tale story and put our own twist on it. Hopefully you can tell this is the Three Little Pigs. I went for a more Steve Urkel feel for the wolf. I'm both happy and disappointed with the way it turned out. Towards the end I started really rushing, and I really didn't think I was going to make it to turn it in on time. As a result, some of the coloring and cleanup gets really sloppy. I'm not too happy with the color choices, but once again, towards the end I was rushing so much, I had no time to adjust it. So I know I could have done better, but I'm still happy with how it turned out and I really do like the idea.

So those are pieces I've been working on in one of my classes all semester long. I'm quite happy and I've grown a lot just from that one class. I'm excited to grow more in the future too because I'm definitely not quite where I want to be.

Warrior Chick WIP

I don't really have time to work on this right now, but I wanted to show my WIP of the Warrior Chick I recently started. Don't mind the skin tone on her outfit... hence the WIP. Hopefully I'll get the work I've been doing for my cartooning class scanned soon and post it here. I have a lot of work ahead of me, but at least I have my character designs done right now. Now it's all about finishing my storyboards and coloring them... top that off with school fun, and you get a twitchy eye for 3 and a half days. Fun! Hopefully when this semester is over, I'll get more art posted.

Warrior Chick

Drew her after going to a lecture by Jose Rivera. Very inspiring. I also bought his artbook, The Mariachi Samurai. Very cool.

I might end up inking and coloring this. I think it's a fun character design and would be fun to see colored.

Trevor lives

This is a character I designed for my 3D animation modeling class from last semester. His name is Trevor. I'll be putting hair on later. My current class is rigging and animation. I just got done rigging him, and right now I'm in the process of painting skin weights on him. These shots have no official lighting on them, so he looks real pasty. Yes, that's the look I was going for, but lighting would be nice. I may go back and put tattoos on his arms and change his shoes because I'm very much not happy with those. I was originally planning on tatting him up, but I got lazy. I also need to tweak his belt and wristband a little. They look too sharp and lazily shaped... which they were.

Oh, dear Trevor, you still have much to be done. I'd like to finish what I stated above minus the hair before class on Saturday... but we'll see.
